Prime Minister Balen Shah Visits Mustang by Road via Pokhara: A Quiet Journey to Nepal’s Himalayan Heartland

One of Nepal’s most talked-about and breathtaking destinations, Mustang, recently welcomed a notable visitor: Nepal’s young and dynamic Prime Minister, Balendra Shah.

In a journey that took him away from the political centre of Kathmandu and into the rugged Himalayan landscape, Shah travelled to Mustang with his family on a private visit. Rather than taking a direct flight, he made the journey overland, travelling through the Beni–Jomsom road towards the highland district.

The trip also brought him to Muktinath, one of Nepal’s most revered spiritual destinations. Shah visited the temple during the evening, offering prayers before spending the night in Jomsom. He later returned to Kathmandu, bringing the short Himalayan getaway to an end.

But beyond the visit itself, the journey has once again turned attention towards Mustang; a place where dramatic mountains, ancient settlements, spiritual heritage and challenging roads come together.

For local tourism businesses, the Prime Minister’s arrival carries significance. Mustang tourism representatives believe the visit could further increase attention towards the region, particularly its religious tourism centred around Muktinath. His overland journey also meant experiencing first-hand the condition of the Beni–Jomsom road, a major route used by both locals and visitors.

From the winding Kali Gandaki corridor to the spiritual calm of Muktinath, Mustang has always offered a journey unlike any other in Nepal.

A private journey for Balen Shah, but a moment that once again put Mustang in the spotlight.
