China has included Nepal as a targeted tourist destination for Chinese citizens in its latest list of Approved Destination Status (ADS). This means that Chinese tourists can now travel to Nepal for tourism purposes.
China has added Nepal as a targeted tourist destination for Chinese citizens in the second phase of international travel after COVID-19. The announcement was made by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Nepali tourism-related organizations had requested China to include Nepal as a destination earlier. The Nepali embassy in Beijing has confirmed Nepal's inclusion in the list of 20 countries. Tourist agencies have released information on Weibo regarding measures to control and prevent the spread of COVID-19 and arrangements for hotels and air tickets for tourists. Nepal was not included in the previous list, but after the embassy contacted various Chinese government agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism, China eventually responded positively to Nepal's request.
In 2020, China closed down locations and air travel due to COVID-19. Nepal hoped that when those places reopened, Chinese tourists would come to Nepal. However, Nepalese tourism businesses were disappointed when Nepal was not included in the first list of Approved Destination Status (ADS) after China reopened.
