Religion in Tibet

Religion in Tibet is predominantly Tibetan Buddhism, which is a unique form of Buddhism that has evolved over centuries in Tibet. Tibetan Buddhism is based on the teachings of the Buddha, but also incorporates elements of indigenous Tibetan beliefs, such as shamanism and animism.

Tibetan Buddhism has a rich tradition of religious art, including thangkas (paintings on silk), mandalas (geometric diagrams), and statues. Monasteries and temples are important centers of religious and cultural life, with many of them situated in stunning natural locations.

In addition to Tibetan Buddhism, there are also some Tibetans who practice Bon, which is an indigenous religion that pre-dates the arrival of Buddhism in Tibet. Bon includes shamanism, ancestor worship, and rituals to appease local deities.

Despite being an autonomous region of China, there have been tensions between Tibetans and the Chinese government over the practice of Tibetan Buddhism and other aspects of Tibetan culture. However, Tibetan Buddhism remains an important part of Tibetan identity and culture.
