Transportation and Customs in Tibet

By Overland & Organized Tours:

One option for adventurous travelers to enter or leave Tibet is by road, following the same path that explorers have attempted for over a century. This 8-day Tibet Overland tour requires great stamina and is best experienced through organized tours due to the vast distances involved. In fact, solo travel is not permitted and organized tours must be arranged prior to entering Tibet. To enter Tibet from Chengdu or Kathmandu, travelers must book a "tour" and are encouraged to consider our Cultural Tours, Trekking, and Fixed Departures for an organized and enjoyable experience.

By Air:

Air travel is a convenient and popular way to travel from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Flights from Kathmandu to Lhasa take around 90 minutes and offer stunning views of the Himalayan Mountains. However, it's important to note that due to the high altitude of Lhasa, visitors are advised to take precautions to prevent altitude sickness. It's recommended to acclimatize slowly upon arrival and avoid strenuous activity for the first few days. Additionally, visitors should dress appropriately for the weather, which can be cool even in the summer months. Despite these considerations, air travel to Lhasa from Kathmandu offers a quick and relatively easy way to access this unique and fascinating region.

Customs:

Exporting art objects and antiques from Tibet is restricted, and anything made before 1959 is considered an antique. While rugs and small religious objects sold in open markets can be bought and exported as souvenirs, travelers should be aware that customs officials may confiscate jewelry or other objects if they are deemed to have purchased an excessive amount. It's important to keep in mind these restrictions to avoid any potential issues when departing from Tibet.
